Open Question: How thick should the glass be in a china cabbinet?

Hello, we just bought a great china cabbinet at a low cost since it is missing all the glass shelves in it. We would like to get these shelves made but the one glass store said to make it 1-2 inches thick so it can hold all the plates, glasses, etc. That just seems so thick to me! Any suggestions or advice? thanks! 1 to 2 inches
