Open Question: How to determine the type of wood on an old dresser?

I have 2 dressers from United Furniture Corporation that are at least 50 years old. My dad had them when he was a kid and he is 47. The problem is that i am refinishing them to a darker color but one of the pieces is just beaten up over the years so I was going to replace it but i dont know what type of wood it is. Im assuming oak but i honestly have no idea. The wood has a very rough grain and a pale gold color. Any other ways to determin what i may have?
