Open Question: Wall Marked After Removing Dado Rail?

Hi Guys. Im doing a bit of DIY in the lounge. When I moved in to the house there was a dado rail around the middle of the room and the fire place wasn't centre. Ive taken down all of the dado rail and brought a beautiful new fire suite. Only problem is, after removing the dado rail the wall is left with marks where the wall above and below was painted to the dado rail. The dado was only glued on so it came off easily enough, no screw holes or missing plaster. I sampled painting a spot, and as expected, the marks can be seen. So, I tried sanding the "dado area" with an electric sander, then put on a coat of paint, it still seems to be visible. Will it be hidden if I use lots of coats of paint? Before I sanded the area, rubbing my hand across the wall, the gap could clearly be feels. But after sanding it, it felt very smooth, so I am surprised that the marks are still showing. Help with this would be very much appreciated, I want my walls to look as good as possible. Thanks.
