Open Question: Building a green kit home.?I am planning on building a modular kit home that will be placed in the middle of nowhere and i was hoping i can get some information from those who know better than I. building will be panel construction, highly insulated. Will be made for long term living for one person. Have not settled on square footage of the structure but will be relatively small. Will have basic amenities such as bathroom, kitchen, sleeping and workspace. Will have one computer for writing and entertainment with a peak 400 watts power supply. Will be in oregon forest so lotsa rain and not much sun. My questions are what type and amount of solar panels should i use to make it self contained? Any recommendations on appliances, water catching, eco commode and so forth? I can build it but making it self contained and completely off the grid is where i am lost. Since solar is so popular now there is a ton of misleading information and sifting through it is daunting. If anyone can help, i will be grateful. Thanks much Jim Open Question: Upgrading new furnace system?OK, I am sure this has been asked before, but I am clueless when it comes to HVAC. We bought a 60 year old home in April that has an oil furnace. I live in Ohio and this winter has been pretty cold. Obviously, our furnace has run quite a bit and we have filled the oil tank 3 times already at over $300 a pop! Now we are looking into new furnace systems because we can't afford filling up the tank this many times. I know we have both electric and gas options. I have read both sides of the debate, but still need a little help deciding. Won't it cost a lot for me to run the gas line from the street to the house? Will gas end up being cheaper than electric to run? I have priced it before and know that electric will be cheaper to install, but have also read that it will not be as warm and could end up increasing our electric bill significantly! Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
