Open Question: Can I make a concrete tabletop by pouring cement over an old wood tabletop - skip rebar and mesh?

I have a small wood table with nice rounded corners, and really nice unusual legs. The top is about 1" thick and 2.5 square feet. The top is not in great shape. It was dinged up to begin with and then painted years ago with a semi-gloss paint but not sanded well beforehand. It looks sorta herdy-gerdy... I would like to turn this table into a cement table and am wondering if I can use the tabletop as is as the bottom of the form (eg., skip building a complete form with mesh and rebar), build out a 1" or so lip around the edge and then pour concrete so that it covers the tabletop. In the end, the table would be 2" thick with the bottom 1" being wood (I'd sand the edges down so that they are clean) and the top 1" would be concrete. If this isn't a crazy idea, should I use something like Sacrete? Or self-levelling cement? I am not looking for a super polished finish in the end. Appreciate any insight, advice, guidance. Thanks!
