Open Question: Certain light switches do not work?

Open Question: Certain light switches do not work?

This just happened to me a little while ago. I went to turn on the kitchen light and nothing happened, I checked the circuit breakers in the garage and found none of the breakers had tripped. I eventually turned the breakers off and on one at a time, and still nothing changed. After a while I noticed that there were more lights that didn't work. So far I have the kitchen lights, the light below the stairs, and the master bathroom all left in the dark (no power). I got my multimeter and took the panel off the circuit breaker box. I had my ground of the meter on ground, and I tested every breaker and they all had about 123vAC. I went back into the kitchen and took the face plate off of one of the switches that's not working. I did the same, I held the ground on ground and I tested the other two wires. I am no electrician, but with the switch off I get ~30vAC on one pole, then the other pole I get ~240vAC. I flipped the switch on and tested again. I got the following values. Pole 1: ~123vAC, pole 2 I get the same value. I don't know what the problem is, but I sure would like to figure it out. Thanks..... I tested the switch in the kitchen again and I was wrong about the voltage, its actuall ~300vAC on both poles. I am noticing that there are more light switches that does not work around the house. Some upstairs and some downstairs. So basically what you are saying is, I should check all the switches for loose wiring? I know before I got into the house there was a problem with the light and fan in the master bedroom. I don't know who came out to fix it, but when we got into the house the light and fan worked. I had asked what was the problem, but I never did get an answer. This sould be a simple problem, but it also could be a hard problem. Hopefully I can learn from you folks and get it all working again soon. Thanks again... Almost forgot, when the kitchen light didn't work I changed the bulbs. Thats when I realized that it wasn't the bulbs and something more serious.
