Open Question: How do I make a giant fish? and more... Open Question: How do I make a giant fish?Me and my friends have been inspired to make a huge fish. We want it to stay outside, and be able to deal with the elements, and be pretty strong. It'd be most likely made of wood, as that's all we can really get out hands on. Ideally it'd be like 10 feet long, but we'd probably settle for about 5 feet long, and 2-3 feet tall. How should we start? Nail a bunch of wood together and hope it eventually resembles a fish? We don't really want a step by step guide, but any ideas are welcome. Thanks! It should be 3d, ideally. Open Question: Has anyone ever constructed a deck planter? I'm making one to cover a hole in my deck?I took out a tree that was growing through my deck and now I have a big square hole with the tree stump flush with the level of the deck. I thought about fixing it would probably be expensive and when we sell the house the area will look different and prospective buyers would wonder if the deck broke through in that area or something. Then someone had the idea of building a planter around it to cover it up. It doesn't sound like it would be that hard and it would just have to be decorative because the stump could support the actual plant. Has anyone ever made one? Any advice? By the way, don't ever build a deck around a tree. The previous owners didn't want to take out this big tree when they put in the extension with a deck on the back of it. A month after we moved in, we had a big storm and it knocked a big branch it off smashing our carport. Two big branches remained, one poised above a power line, the other above our neighbors fence. If the wind happened to blow the branches sideways, it would send them through our big bay window. We had it taken down shortly after. Fortunately the house is nice enough to offset the cost of the tree, and it has been one expensive tree. Open Question: Has anyone noticed a difference between brands of paint?Last summer I painted my living room using behr premium eggshell. I did the color match system at Home Depot to match the Ralph Lauren cottonwood color swatch. I thought the walls looked just okay. Then I needed more to paint the adjoining hall, which has a little bit less light, but the same trim and everything. The Ralph Lauren eggshell happened to be on sale so that's what I got. The color in the hall ended up looking so awesome that I decided to paint my bathroom and basement with the Ralph Lauren kind. Eventually I'm going to get more and give my living room a coat of the Ralph Lauren kind. I also got Ralph Lauren white semi-gloss for my woodwork and for some reason I hated it. It really didn't go on right and I wasn't crazy about the color. I liked Olympia white semi-gloss better. I always thought that paint was paint and that the color was what mattered, but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has noticed that some paints work better than others or had any opinions about paint. I have a lot of painting to do and wanted opinions and advice. Thanks!
