Open Question: Wood screws vs carriage bolts for my wall mounted workbench?Hi, I've seen you answer a similar question on Yahoo about carriage bolts vs lag bolts, but my question is a little different. I have a 2x6 lagged (3/8) to 5 studs in my garage horizontally. Under the 2x6, I have 2x4 that run vertically along the studs and are also lagged into the studs also with 3/8 lag bolts. I am now assembling the frame for the top and the angle supports: |-----------------------| | horizontal 2x4 for top |-----------------------| | /??/ | / / | / / | / / | / / <-- 2x4 angle support for top | / / | / | / |/ My question is, where the two ?? are at the top of the angle support, should I use 3" wood screws, or carriage bolts? I basically want strength. Screws can break but most likely won't get loose. However, bolts will NOT break and if I use washers on both sides of the wood with a lock washer, should not work loose either. Is it better for me to use wood screws or carriage bolts where the angle support meets my horizontal support? Can I fill this gap with insulating foam? I am talking about foam that you can spray into the gap and which expands and dries into solid. Is it ok to use this material for this purpose? I want to close the gap because geckos and insects seem to like it!
