Open Question: redoing my floors....?

I am reading you can put cement over subfloors. Can I do a thin coat of cement and then stain it? Would this be cost effective? living room/bed room. About 600sqft. I have HORRIBLE carpet now, with wood subfloors. I don't want carpet but need something cost effective.

Open Question: How do I help my new drywall patches blend with my old walls?

I have an older house - at least 60 years old. The drywall has not really been patched or anything since it was originally built but has been painted many, many times. I have patched some holes, and am now having problems blending those patches. I have sanded really smooth (when I feel it, it feels smooth), but now that I've primed it looks like crap! I have sanded it good but can see the smooth patches compared to the old wall. I have primed twice already and may prime again so that at least there is more texture overtop of the patches before I paint. Any advice on this? Is this somethign that's common because of the old walls? Note - I don't have texture on my walls currently.
