Open Question: How to protect wood from high temperatures?

I am building a multi-cage system to organize my reptiles. The cage will be made mostly out of wood. To save money I will integrate incandescent sockets into the cages but the bulbs mite get too hot and the wood closest to the bulbs could char. What is the easiest and cheapest way to prevent the wood from charring under high temps for a continuous period of time? I read that a normal 60 watt bulb has a surface temp of 250F
